Having fun with Unreal and Unreal (the player!)

Well we were horsing around on one of the Illhaven maps and we decided to have an amateurish attempt at setting up the board from a chess game....

We became a bit unstuck when it came to placing a knight (horse-guy).

This got us thinking.... has anyone ever seen a horse in this game....ever? A Nali horse could be a interesting pawn or maybe even a Nali on horseback. They have 4 arms, they could ride the horse and wield a weapon at the same time! Unrealistic to attempt I'm sure..... :)

Someone else gave this a hilarious go in 1998 :-

PS. It got really complicated, because without refinements, there is no way to distinguish black from white pieces. :titter:
But it was fun nonetheless. :cheesygrin:

WOOF!

If I were making an Unreal-themed chessboard:

The Skaarj team:
King = Warlord
Queen = Queen
Bishop = Krall
Knight = SkaarjWarrior
Rook = Brute
Pawn = Pupae

The Nali / Fauna of Na Pali team:
King = NaliPriest
Queen = Titan
Bishop = Slith
Knight = NaliCow
Rook = Gasbag
Pawn = Manta

:)

Unreal ALPHA pawns (1995)

I made a skinned/uv mapped version of the horse body but without animations, fact is apart from the wings which had a skin, the horse had originally just gouraud shading that was only avaiable in very alpha unreal engine. yrex made a rather faithful conversion of this shading but I did make the horse have actual skin afterwards on his body. No animations though but for your purposes it could be enough.

EDIT:
I suppose those initial imports by gizzy into Unreal as seen in MMU's picture with the defaultexture could do for "white pawns" wouldn't they?

Technically though, all those aren't 1995, the nelsian (halfdog) files are from 1996. Though there could have been a 1995 version for all I know *shrugs* but probably wasn't two legged then...(just as the 1995 "bible" describes a dog)

Thanks for the replies. :)

Basically I think the Warrior Nali deserves a horse!

This guy looks like someone who has lost his horse!

Problem solved :-

That's a nice pony. Ponys seem to be friendly with me, but horses get a little upset around me usually.

Reminds me of that movie with Jack Nicholson when he was turning werewolf, whatever it was called again, wasn't it called simply Wolf or something?

Either way, I'm not really "turning", I stay the same as I am (I think). Though really, last time I encountered a real horse up close it really got upset so much and went agressive at me.
